Comparing and Contrasting Persepolis and Funny Boy Essay...

As a child, we’re presented with ample information that is all relatively new to us. The knowledge acquired in childhood is given to us by our parents and relatives. This allows us to grow, but the influence of our family is what shapes our culture and beliefs. Although our parents believe this is the best culture to follow, we often find ourselves questioning it. This creates complexity within the acceptance of being part of one’s culture. Shyam Selvadurai and Marjane Satrapi, use this theme within their respective novels, Funny Boy and Persepolis to demonstrate the transcendence from innocence to experience. Both main characters are introduced as children that go through an evolution to reach adulthood. Culture challenges the characters†¦show more content†¦( p. 46, Shyam Selvadurai) This quote demonstrates a change in Arjie’s perception. Moreover, the fact that Selvadurai implicates this quote at the beginning of the chapter is symbolic. He does this to symbolize a change in Arjie through the physical appearance of a supporting character. Furthermore, Arjie is caught off guard which depicts how fictional his thoughts on reality are. During the conclusion of the chapter Arjie’s perception of love and beauty is revolutionized through the â€Å"love life† of his Aunt. Arjie goes on to say â€Å"†¦I felt no pleasure, for I knew that, although everything would happen in the way I had dreamed there would be something missing. †¦ I thought of the love-comics and how fervently believed in them, believed that if two people loved each other everything was possible. Now, I knew this was not so.†(pp.99-100, Shyam Selvadurai) This clearly indicates a change in perception in the young boys mind and this would be one of the first steps in the transcendence of Arjie’s character. Selvadurai effectively uses Radha Auntie and many other supporting characters throughout the novel in order to aid the main charac ter evolve. Similar to Arjie, Marjie from Persepolis depicts evolution through the aid of supporting characters. In this novel, Satrappi uses many characters to evolve Marjie’s understanding of the world. For example, at the beginning of the novel, Marjie is introduced to her uncle Anoosh. He is branded as a communist under the Shaw’s

The City Of Ancient Greece - 1223 Words

The city-states of ancient Greece were at constant strife with each other. They utterly detested each other and were solely independent. However, many factors unified the Greeks, loosely, at all times, and they even brought the Greeks together at times. These factors came to be because of their similarities of traditions and beliefs. Language, religion, and athletics were all results of these factors. Language unified because everyone would understand what was being said by anyone, and athletics would gather the people to one place, allowing for discussion and chances of treaties being made. Also, Religion unified because the Greeks all believed and feared common gods and goddesses. Language played its role in a passive way, but it was†¦show more content†¦An example of this would be the Tower of Babel. In this time period of history, the world was not divided into nations. All the people of the world were all in one place and spoke one common language. They tried to build a tower to reach the heavens and make a name for themselves, but God did not approve of this. Therefore, he decided to confuse all the languages of the people, creating many different languages. All of a sudden, the people could not understand each other because they all spoke different languages, resulting in the people scattering all over the world. This shows us how important it is to have a common language, and no matter how unimportant it looks, it is one of the biggest contributing factors to unifying a nation or civilization. Along with a common language, the ancient Greeks had a common alphabet. There were two main forms of the alphabet, but they only had slight differences like the dialect of the Greeks. This was also important in unifying Greece because a common alphabet also meant that communication through letters was possible between city-states, and literature, history, and knowledge could be passed down from generation to generation. All the knowledge and ideas from famous philosophers, such as Plato, Socrates, Pythagoras, and Aristotle, could be passed down in history, and poems, stories, religious information, history, and plays could be passed down. This meant that their

As the relationship grows stronger, there are important decisions that need to be made. We will write a custom essay sample on Couples Should Cohabit Before Marriage or any similar topic only for you Order Now One in particular is the living arrangements of the couple. There are couples that decide to live together before marriage to see if their partnership will work. Some people are appalled by the fact that a couple would move in together and live as a married couple, because they believe it to be ungodly and that ex and children should only be a result of marriage. However, there are people who do not believe in religion, nor do they care if you live together before marriage or not . Couples should live together before marriage because they will learn more about themselves and each other before taking such a big step. Couples living together prior to marriage will find out if they are financially compatible. Once a couple makes the transition of moving in together, they will see how easy or hard it will be to manage their money. The fact of having one household instead f two will make it easy also all utility, water, grocery, and rent will be split in half. Living together before marr iage will help a couple find out if maybe one is too frivolous with their money, and if the situation could be controlled before taking the next step into marriage. For example, maybe the boyfriend will get his paycheck go out to the bar spend and all of his money then come home broke. As a result, the girl is stuck paying the bills for the month. The financial burden of taken care of oneself is hard, but if a partner is irresponsible with their money, it can get expensive. Couples that live together before marriage also will learn more about themselves. After a couple has moved in together, they will have all of these expectations of each other. For example, my husband and I lived together before we were married, during this time we gave up our single lives. There was no partying at the clubs, hanging out with friends, or any nightlife what so ever. So being in this relationship meant that we would be totally devoted to each other. Giving up your single life to join with your partner means losing freedom, and a sense of ones self. Living together before marriage can help one to realize what a relationship is about, and if giving up their single life is what they are willing to sacrifice to share a lifetime with their partner. Marriage should last forever, so living together in advance can help a person realize if this is the life they want. Couples will learn more about their partner when living together before marriage. Hopefully, before a couple moves in together they will know if one another has any manners, bad habits or if one likes to fight. For example, when walking into the kitchen nd your boyfriend is moving the dishes out of the sink before he urinates in it. This would be disgusting and behavior like that is not acceptable. Or, after using the restroom he does not wash his hands. The lack of hand washing could actually be harmful especially if he prepares the family’s dinners. There are also more serious issues like when your partner is angry, will he or she get physically abusive. If a coupl e, has an irreparable problem in the relationship while living together then they can simply move out. Living together teaches a couple about their partners, and tolerance of each ther. In conclusion, some people may say that their religious practices do not allow them to live together before marriage, but I say couples should live together before marriage because they will learn more about themselves, their partners, and it is more convenient financially. Toleration of bad habits and the loss of one’s individualism will come with the territory of living together or being married. So if there are problems in the relationship now that cannot be fixed then it is safe to assume their will be problems if the couple foolishly decides to marry. .
